I’ve been ashamed of this moment my whole life.- Combat Matt

“I am an alcoholic after three drinks.” - Jar Jar

THE BIG ARTICLE THIS MONTH:

"HOW TO LIVE FOREVER AND HAVE FUN DOING IT"

a transmission from the All-Seer

“I'll tell you what you missed when the ocean met the sky.  You missed when time and lie shook hands and said goodbye.  You missed when the earth folded in on itself and said, 'Good luck!.' ”  - Dann Gallucci, Eric Judy, Isaac Brock

Sc-fi novels will have you believe the universe can be saved.  So many stories focus on a hero racing to and from star systems to keep the bad guy from deploying a device that will end life as we know it.  But it must be stressed these tales are more fiction than science.  In truth, the battle to save the universe was lost long ago.  There is nothing we can do to prevent the stars from running out of gas, or the planets from depleting their tectonic energy, or the galaxies from collapsing under their own gravitational weight.  A villain’s evil plan to destroy the universe is redundant because everything is already on its way out.  We are late to the party and the beer is all gone.

As we sink deeper into the mire of existential dread, each orbit around the sun pushing you deeper into inescapable muck, the most natural thing in the world is to daydream about how one could hypothetically live forever.  We complicate science with more intricate calculations and experiments, to try to prove that light can go backwards in time, maybe, or that worm holes can transport you to a different dimension, perhaps, with the hope of showing that mortality is just a theory and not a fact. More powerful, energy-guzzling machines are built to calculate denser equations on quantum levels to find some way, any way, to prolong consciousness beyond a mere life expectancy of 77.28 years.

1.  A really healthy smoothie.  Gather raw, vegan, 100% organic ingredients and blend a smoothie that will extend your life beyond the great infinity.  I’m talking kale, chard, parsley, fennel, and Siberian chaga mixed with probi- otic coconut yogurt and topped with cayenne turmeric.  A healthy smoothie can do wonders in preventing a forever sleep in eternal damnation.

A nanobot restoring a dying cell.

2. Nanobot Cell Regeneration: this strategy is seen as rudimentary (and it has several glaring issues), but can still be useful in the shortterm.  The idea is that as a body’s cell breaks down, a nanbot only a few atoms in size will perform maintenance and restore the cell to tiptop shape.  There are roughly 100 billion cells in a body, so it would require 100 billion nanobots to surveil each cell and address any tissue issues that crop up.  Obviously this can extend life in the short term, but after a long enough period of time (say, 5 billion years), the nanobots will decay and then you will need nanobots to repair the nanobots.  Eventually those second-tier nanobots will need third-tier nanobots to repair them, etc., rinse-and-repeat until all the matter in the universe is consumed by this convoluted nanobot repair system.  So you may be able to squeeze out a solid 5-10 billion year lifespan from this method, but it does not qualify as “living     forever,” especially since it does not address the entropy problem.

A brain thinking very quickly.

3.  Speed Up The Rate of Thinking:  Do you remember how slowly time moved when you were a kid?  An hour felt like forever, and a year was incomprehensible.  But now you’re an adult, and an hour goes   by in the blink of an eye, and you cut through the years like a hot knife through butter.  This is because you are old now, and your brain has slowed down. Your neurons no longer fire off a trillion messages per second…it’s more like 1/10th of that now.  If you are able to speed up your neurons, and get back to that trillion messages per second mark, then the hours would again feel like forever. And  if you kept speeding up your neurons, to 2 trillion or 10 trillion or 100 trillion messages per second, then an hour would come to feel like forever times infinity.  We will call a being that operates at such a speed a “Superintelligence.”  No need to be afraid of the end of time if the remaining time can be in- finitely stretched in the mind of a Superintelligence.  However, something to chew on with this longevity strategy: if a Superintelligence grows without limit and speeds its thought processes to the speed of light, then you will create a lot of heat that will need to dissipate.  If you aren’t careful, your brain will literally melt out from your ears.

A sand dollar (or any matter) can be used to store information.  Fundamental particles have quantum properties such as charge, spin, mass and momentum.  These properties can convey deeper meaning if arranged purposefully, like the letters of the alphabet.  This information is conserved until the particle interacts with another particle and decays.

4. Universal Matter Manipulation: As time goes on, a Superintelligent being can gain more and more control over a less and less resourceful universe.  For example, as a Superintelligence’s brain grows, it may begin to store neuronic information within the atomic structures of asteroids, the way humans can store mp3s on compact discs.  A Superintelligence could continue to record its thoughts in every mote of matter until all of nature is essentially “technologized,” and the distinction between what is natural and what is artificial disappears.3  This would allow an intelligence to extend its conscious life until the very end of time.

A downward dog.

5.  Yoga: do one downward dog a day and you might be able to solve the mortality problem.  Hey, it doesn’t hurt to try!

Well, that’s about all I’ve got for now.  Thanks for reading this month’s issue, and stay tuned for the next one.  I hope between now and then you will unlock the secret to immortality.  Namaste!

     Sincerely,

     Dr. Intelligent, The Last All-Seer

the porno adventure

When you think about stuff, it may feel as if you are jumping from one clever idea to another, but really the circuitry of your brain is just beating around the bush until you reach the forbidden final destination of  human imagination:  picturing other human beings stark naked, without any clothes on at all.

This is why I created a cutting edge interactive video experience I call the

"PORNO ADVENTURE."

While on the PORNO ADVENTURE, your friendly Guide will escort you through a maze of mysterious hallways on a search for pornographic material.  But be careful!  Not all pathways lead to a sensuous prize--you may in fact discover yourself face-to-face with the Demonking himself!

While not exactly NSFW, there may be some quick moments of brief artistic nudity depending on how well your porno adventure goes.  What are you waiting for, check it out now!

  • TACHYONS.  A tachyon is a particle that travels faster than light.  Unlike ordinary particles, the speed of a tachyon increases as its energy decreases.  At zero energy, it can travel the universe end-to-end instantaneously.  If a human were to spot a tachyon, an interesting phenomena would occur:  since a tachyon moves faster than the speed of light, we can not see it approaching. After a tachyon has passed nearby, we would be able to see two images of it, appearing and departing in opposite directions.

  • WHAT CAUSES THE ILLUSION OF THE PASSAGE OF TIME?   It could be this:  we are at each instant of our lives.  Every moment of past and future history exists permanently in the framework of  4-D space-time.  Your earlier self, who picked up this zine and opened to this page, will always exist.  You will always be holding this zine and reading this sentence.  Every instant of your life exists always.  Time does not pass.  You might argue, “Look, I know I am existing right now.  The past is gone and the future doesn’t exist yet.  If the past existed, it would be possible for me to jump my consciousness back five minutes.”  But there is no consciousness to jump back or forth; you are always conscious at each instant of your life.  The consciousness of five minutes ago is unalterable.  Even if it were meaningful to speak of “jumping back five minutes” and even if it were somehow possible to do this; you wouldn’t notice that you had done it!  For if you entered back into your body and mind of five minutes ago, you would have no memory of having been in the future.  You would think the same thoughts and perform the same actions.  You could jump back over and over, read this paragraph 50 times, and not notice.

  • COMPULSION LOOPS.  When the time comes for egg laying, the Sphex wasp builds a burrow for the purpose and seeks out a cricket which she stings in such a way as to paralyze but not kill it.  She drags the cricket into the burrow, lays her eggs alongside, closes the burrow, then flies away, never to return.  In due course, the eggs hatch and the wasp grubs feed off the paralyzed cricket, which has not decayed, having been kept in the wasp equivalent of a deepfreeze.  To the human mind, such an elaborately organized and seemingly purposeful routine conveys a convincing flavor of logic and thoughtfulness--until more details are examined.  For example, the wasp's routine is to bring the paralyzed cricket to the burrow, leave it on the threshold, go inside to see that all is well, emerge, and then drag the cricket in.  If the cricket is moved ad few inches away while the wasp is inside making her preliminary inspection, the wasp, on emerging from the burrow, will bring the cricket back to the threshold, but not inside, and will then repeat the preparatory procedure of entering the burrow to see that everything is all right.  If again the cricket is removed a few inches while the wasp is inside, once again she will move the cricket up to the threshold and reenter the burrow for a final check.  The wasp never thinks of pulling the cricket straight in.  On one occasion this procedure was repeated forty times, always with the same result.

  • DEATH STICKS. What if the warnings of diseases and death on cigarette packs are actually advertisements?

  • BECAUSE OUR UNIVERSE IS EXPANDING, it can be assumed there is a 4-dimensional object passing through our 3-dimensional existence, and that we are the shadow of the 4-dimensional object.

  • DURING THE DAY YOUR CONSCIOUSNESS IS A PERFECT SPHERE.

But at night as you drift off, and that boundary between wake & sleep approaches, your consciousness starts to flatten into a disk. The closer you get to falling asleep, the thinner the disk becomes but the larger its diameter grows, until you are right on top of the boundary and the disk's diameter is infinite.

During this very brief moment, when your consciousness disk is spread across reality like strawberry jam on toast, everything that exists is enveloped by your mind.  During this very brief moment, you are able to see all things and understand the connections these things have with one another, no matter how different or far apart. During this very brief moment, when you tightrope walk the boundary of knowing and not, all truths are equidistant to your memory processing center.

If you can train yourself to commandeer the fleeting moment your consciousness disk is at infinite expansion, and hold it in a lucid state, then you can "spike" your mind to pinpoint any bit of data contained within your world.  Your mind spike can pierce through the layered realities of the universe and reveal any truth you seek.

Your mind spike can even reveal the truth that is universally sought by all.  The truth that this existence in which we are caught is so filled with connections--between every single person, animal, plant, and atom--that it is a fibrous hoard of airtight bramble, a solid state mass of concrete, and the truth is that as we think we are finding our way through this hypnagogic dream-state, it is actually that we don't move at all.

But then you're fully asleep.  And you've missed the opportunity to understand what existence is all about.  Better try again tomorrow.

  • MYELINTERNET.  The design of the hypertext transfer protocol (”http”), and the way we jump around the Internet by clicking on links that take us to links that take us to links, seems to mirror the exact way in which the human brain recalls memories that spur memories that spur other memories..

  • FORCED LAUGHTER.  Is our generation the unfunniest group of people so far?  Sometimes it really feels like no one learned how to tell a joke, a paradox because no one my age is ever serious.  Our collective sense of humor has been Homer-Simpsonized--we can't stop laughing at how to do simple tasks in the dumbest way possible.  Browsing online just now, I found a video of a comedian using a pizza cutter to slice up a pizza box and eat it (the pizza box was labeled "Eat Now!"); another of a woman using the security feed at a supermarket's self checkout lane to apply makeup (quite literally "checking" herself "out).  But the Simpsons is funny because there are consequences to Homer's boneheaded stupidity, whereas we who scroll social media alone don't witness the moral of any story.  Social Media moves too quickly to build up to a punchline.  So the only sort of joke we feel comfortable making is purposely misinterpreting a posted sign and then acting like a buffoon because the "sign says so" (ie. 2% milk advertises a price of three dollars, so you give the cashier one-hundred-and-fifty dollars because you want to buy 100% of the milk), or fabricating one-sentence situations ("tried to propose to gf but she made a face so I had to pretend I was making a YouTube prank video") and posting them to Twitter, an alt-right schizo-social media website. This is the type of humor that crushes with the twelve-years-and-younger crowd.  It seems like we have lost the funny by laughing too often.

  • HUMAN REPLICATION.  Why do we expend so many resources attempting to recreate humanity in different mediums (AI, chatbots, robots, etc.)?  We can just have children and it’s the same result.

  • WHAT REMAINS OF YOUR PAST, if you didn’t allow yourself to feel it when it happened?  If you don’t have your experiences in the moment, if you gloss them over with jokes or zoom past them, you end up with curiously dispassionate memories.  Procedural and depopulated.  It’s as if a neutron bomb went off and all you’re left with are hospital corridors, where you’re scanning the walls for familiar photographs.

"GRADUATION MONEY"

an old comic has resurfaced

An oldie, but a goodie?  Okay, maybe an average-ie.  But hey, content is content...right?  Check out this classic comic from the ongoing series "As The Rot Sets In."  It's called GRADUATION MONEY, and it explores the lingering guilt behind the act of writing (or not writing) thank you notes to those who want the best for you.

WARNING:  STEREOGRAPHIC CONTENT!!!

It seems counterintuitive that the universe is expanding at an increasing speed--shouldn’t it be slowing down as cosmic energy gets used up?

One way to explain the universe’s simultaneous expansion and collapse is to view its existence through a stereographic projection:

The sphere represents the path of the true “unobservable” universe in which we live.  The universe cannot be observed directly because it is at least one spatial dimension higher than what our brain will let us compute.

The plane which bisects the sphere represents the "observable" universe--what we see when we look up at the sky at night.

Let “N” denote the singularity toward which our universe is collapsing.  And "P" represents our position on the sphere.  From P, we can see out onto the plane to point s(P).  As P moves north towards N, we are sucked toward the singularity but our straight line of vision extends further out onto the plane.

The moment right before P and N combine, the plane of the observable universe will expand exponentially and be nearly infinite.

buncha crunch

One theory, concerning the death of the universe, is playfully known as the "big crunch." According to this theory, the universe will one day stop expanding. Then, as gravity pulls on the matter, the universe will begin to contract, falling inward until it has collapsed back into a super-hot, super-dense singularity. If the theory holds true, the universe is like a giant soufflé. It starts out small, then expands as it heats up. Eventually, however, the soufflé cools and begins to collapse. 5

It is possible that once the universe crunches itself into a singularity, everything will reset back to where it began, and then another Big Bang is initiated.  So in this way, the universe would last forever, like a flower blooming each new spring.

ISO A Young Pair of Eyes.  When I was a young man, I could stare at an object long enough to isolate and focus on a single atom. And if I was quick enough, I could snatch the atom and store it in my desk drawer with others I’d caught. But now I’m old and my eyes aren’t as sharp as they used to be. I can’t seem to locate the atom collection in my desk drawer. I’m sure it’s in there, somewhere.  Can I borrow a young pair of eyes?  ESP 3asdf-3afsd-32a.

ISO A Group of People to think about the same subject at the same time. Maybe we could meet for an hour a week? We could just pick any subject and then think about it together.
